The practice of Spring cleaning actually originated in the Bible when the Israelites would prepare their homes for the Feast of Passover. God gave them instructions in Exodus 12 to rid their homes of all yeast (leaven) - this was symbolic of ridding their homes of sin. This tradition is still observed today.
